Mosaic Of Selfies, 2022
Bolton Park, Wagga Wagga
I was commissioned by the Wagga Wagga City Council to deliver a youth lead mural projects during the school holiday. The mural was to be painted on a pump station that was in the middle of a local oval.
Mosaic of Selfies was delivered in 3 stages and celebrated individuality and self expression. I also created a Youth Team who were my assistants for the whole project.
Stage 1: I ran a series of workshops called the Selfie Tile Workshop. Participants were asked to create a paper collaged self portrait without depicting their face. They had to use symbols and icons that reflect the things that make them unique and special. The artworks created were then documented as ‘tiles’.
Stage 2: I translated the tiles into a digitally illustrated design and brought more cohesion to them all by unifying the colour palette. The tiles were then used to create the final mural design that would be ‘mosaiced’ over the pump station.
Stage 3: The Mural was then painted onto the pump station over a 5 day period. I also delivered a series of painting workshop sessions that allowed the youth to return and assist in painting.
Fun Facts:
I was able to incorporate 18 tile artworks into the final design. More than half of stage 1 workshop participants returned to paint in stage 3. With 2 people attending multiple days.
